CJP background: Structure

  • The Central Johannesburg Partnership (CJP) was established as a tri-lateral partnership between business, community and the then local authority in June 1992, following a city consultative workshop held in November 1991, The CJP was registered as a (Pty) Ltd Company.
  • With the establishment of a democratic, representative local government in November 1995, the tri-lateral nature of the CJP was no longer appropriate and the CJP was restructured into a Section 21 Company (not for gain) broadly representing and financed by major inner city business.
  • From January 1998, the CJP, whilst retaining its Section 21 status, essentially became independent of corporate membership and finance. As a private NPO (non-profit organisation) it earns its income through a variety of sources.
  • 'Partnerships for Urban Renewal' (PUR) was established by the CJP late in 1997 to focus on urban issues in areas outside of the Johannesburg Inner City. The objective was for PUR to provide a consulting and urban management service throughout the Johannesburg Metropolitan area (other than in the traditional CJP operating area of the Johannesburg Inner City) and an urban consulting service throughout Africa.
  • The various interests that had been developed by the CJP since its establishment in 1992 were greatly strengthened in a new relationship forged during 2002/3 and formalised on 1 July 2003. This resulted in the formation of a new organisation within the Kagiso Group known as Kagiso Urban Management (KUM) (www.kum.co.za0. PUR was amalgamated into KUM whilst the CJP remains a private non-profit company with administration provided under contract by KUM.
  • KUM is a multi-disciplinary consulting and management services company specialising in precinct management and precinct development or ‘place making’. It works in partnership with local government, local business interests and urban users/interest groups and undertakes precinct management and provides urban consultancy services throughout southern Africa. As part of the Kagiso Group, KUM is a black owned equal opportunity company.
